ART DÉCO: THE HISTORY OF DECORATIVE ART
The Art Deco style originated in France, derived from the French term "l’art décoratif," meaning decorative art. Its roots lie in the 1920s to 1940s, and it quickly gained international prominence in architecture, design, fine arts, and crafts. The term traces back to the 1925 Paris exhibition "Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels modernes."
Art Deco is considered the successor to Art Nouveau and was noticeably influenced by it. Alongside cubist and futurist elements, influences from Bauhaus, the Dutch art movement De Stijl, and stylistic impulses from foreign cultures—especially African, ancient Egyptian, and Chinese art—played a significant role. Characteristic of Art Deco is an elaborate ornamental style and a preference for precious and luxurious materials like bronze, chrome, ebony, ivory, glass, crystal, leather, or silver.
