Exclusive Bronze and Brass Railings

Crafting high-quality bronze and brass railings is one of the most demanding tasks in exclusive staircase construction. Both alloys present a significant challenge, as their malleable nature during processing leaves no room for error. The precision required in our work is akin to that of a watchmaker. At times, our in-house manufactory transforms into a goldsmith’s studio, especially when embellishing railings with precious metals like gold or silver. Every bronze or brass railing crafted by markiewicz is, of course, a custom-made masterpiece, impressing with its unique design and exceptional functionality.

Why Brass Stair Railings?

Brass railings can be customized to your individual preferences through a wide range of finishing techniques, making brass one of the most versatile materials in staircase construction. The gold-like color of the alloy can be made brighter or softer through artisanal finishing methods:

High gloss

When brass is polished to a high gloss, the unique, gold-like hues of a brass railing are showcased in an impressive way. Each element of the railing must be individually polished by hand to achieve this flawless finish.

Patina

Patination is one way to visually alter the surface. For instance, brass stair railings can be given a warm, bronze-like tone through specialized patination techniques, creating a completely new and inviting atmosphere in the space.

Refinement

Brass doesn’t need to be immediately identifiable in balustrades. The ultimate in exclusivity is achieved with brass railings featuring surfaces coated in precious metals. Options include finishes with 24-karat gold or silver.

A Brass Stair Railing in a Villa in Berlin-Grunewald

The Grunewald district in southwest Berlin is a symbol of extravagance, exclusivity, and refined living. Many tourists, as well as Berliners from other parts of the city, admire the stunning facades of its grand villas. However, this admiration often stops at the entrance gates. We had the privilege and honor of furnishing a Grunewald villa with a stringer staircase featuring a brass railing that stands as an unparalleled masterpiece of craftsmanship.

This project took us into the realm of fashion, with Tommy Hilfiger’s New York penthouse serving as the inspiration for the staircase design. Architect Robert A. M. Stern, whose original vision was refined by the Sebastian Treese architectural firm and brought to life by markiewicz, provided the blueprint. Particularly striking are the elliptical, burnished ornaments of the brass balustrade and its harmonious color palette. The client was thrilled by the finish, the distinctive design, and the exceptional materials used.

The project’s complexity, especially in the sculptural metalworking and design, posed significant challenges—so much so that two of our craftsmen even contemplated quitting. Yet, as the staircase began to take shape, their passion for this demanding project grew, and the result speaks for itself.

The intricacy of this construction was also evident in the work of architect Julia Treese, who meticulously designed what felt like a million intricate details. The success of all the companies involved was built on a shared commitment to impeccable style, premium materials, and flawless execution.

DESIGNING BRONZE OR BRASS RAILINGS

Brass and bronze railings stand out for their versatility, offering countless design possibilities. These include flat bars, round profiles, and decorative details such as ornaments or applications. Art Nouveau-style balustrades, with their elegant floral patterns, are especially captivating. Alternatively, clean and geometric designs are also an option. The creative possibilities are endless. A unique touch, for example, could be rivet-style accents at the joints of the staircase elements. With designs like these, markiewicz honors architectural icons such as Victor Horta, the Art Nouveau master who shaped architectural history.

FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP ENTHUSIASTS: A Quick Guide to Materials

Brass railings have a unique visual charm. The alloy’s color tones change with every touch, cleaning, or polishing. Patinated brass railings, in particular, exude subtle liveliness, as any changes in color or wear enhance their unique character. This makes every patinated brass railing a one-of-a-kind piece. Thanks to these qualities, exclusive brass railings by markiewicz add a crowning touch to buildings whose owners appreciate architecture and art.

Brass comes in various alloys, with the copper content determining its color. The spectrum ranges from light yellow to reddish tones, and brass can even achieve a gold-like shine, often desired for prestigious and exclusive staircases.

An acid bath treatment can create a dark, bronze-like patina that exudes elegance. The final color intensity is adjusted by polishing the patina to match the customer’s preferences. In addition to copper, zinc plays a key role in determining the flexibility of the alloy. Some brass alloys can be shaped cold, while others require heating and forging. No matter the method, the final result is always a unique masterpiece—true “craftsmanship par excellence”!

Bronze railings are equally impressive. Bronze is often seen in the form of bells or sculptures, which are usually made through casting. In staircase construction, bronze is commonly used for newel posts or railing beginnings. Another elegant option is bronze applications, which can beautifully enhance the look of steel railings.

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. Wrought bronze is shaped through pressing, rolling, or drawing, while cast bronze is often used for intricate handcrafted elements in staircase construction. Both forms allow for timeless and artistic designs.
